Prof. Dr. Dr. Andrej Kral was awarded the prestigious Pioneer Award in Basic Science by the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO) — the world’s largest organization for hearing research. Together with Prof. Dr. Stephen G. Lomber (McGill University, Canada), Kral is being recognized for his pioneering research on brain plasticity after hearing loss.

Their award-winning work demonstrates that effective treatment of early childhood hearing loss is only possible during early developmental stages. If hearing loss remains untreated, it leads to permanent changes in the brain — with far-reaching consequences for medical care. The ARO honors outstanding scientific contributions to the understanding of the auditory system with this award.

The prize highlights Kral´s international significance in auditory neuroscience.

Prof. Kral is already active in Project A06 and has played a major role in shaping the concept for a possible second funding phase, in which he will take over project leadership.
