Yesterday, the long-awaited “Zukunftstag” at SIIRI in the NIFE finally kicked off, opening its doors to interested students starting from 8th grade. It was an exciting day full of experiments and discoveries, where participants had the chance to conduct their own research and achieve their first scientific results.

In small experiments, the students explored the pH levels of various beverages such as cola, juice, and water, and examined how these affect the bacteria in the mouth. A particularly exciting part was investigating what is commonly known as dental plaque – or biofilm – and learning how it forms and is influenced on a daily basis.

The results were particularly surprising when testing how dental plaque can be mechanically removed using various methods. Some students thought that chewing gum or using mouthwash would be enough to dissolve the biofilm. However, the actual results showed that nothing is as effective as the combination of toothbrush and toothpaste – a finding that surprised many!

It was an unforgettable day that not only provided knowledge but also emphasized the importance of proper oral hygiene. If you’re curious, sign up for the next “Zukunftstag”. We look forward to researching and discovering with you!
